Description:
The majority of Americans are overweight, and nearly half of us report using food to deal with stress. For many, stress eating can result in emotional distress, obesity, and other eating-related health problems. Diets that focus on weight loss have not been shown to be effective in the long term and may even contribute to weight gain and greater despair.Taking a more holistic approach, mindfulness practices can help people end overeating and make friends with their bodies by using the skill of awareness to manage their emotions and guide their behaviors.
In this workshop, participants will be presented evidence from current epidemiological studies regarding the obesity epidemic, as well as a review of the literature that reveals that diets don’t work. We will then look at stress eating from a behavioral perspective, increasing our understanding of how our eating habits are reinforced over the years. We will experience, first hand, a mindful eating practice, and review the literature that supports the use of mindfulness-based interventions to reduce stress eating. There will be a combination of presentations, mindful eating practices, and guided meditations that are suitable for professionals and the general public.
